I once read a memoir about a guy who works in an advertising firm and he said this: Sometimes you have to sell a product that is so flawed, unnecessary and impractical and make it appear like it's the most perfect and necessary thing to have. Now I see that it's true. People are selling themselves thru ads that make them appear as if they are worthy of emulation and adulation when in fact human beings are flawed and utterly dispensable.
Narcissism comes to mind.
